Trend Assessment by the Mann-Kendall Test and the Innovative Trend Analysis Method (North-West Algeria)

In this article, a trend study, in two watersheds Coastal-Oran and Macta (North-West of Algeria), is carried out using monthly and seasonal rainfall during the period 1975–2015 at 38 stations. Mann-Kendall (MK) and Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA) methods are applied comparatively. The aim of this study is to verify if the trend detection ability is the same in both methods. Monthly rainfall analysis by the MK test shows that 82% of the stations have no significant trends. In contrast, the ITA method detects positive (negative) trends in 56% (33%) of stations in the low rainfall component, 53% (40%) in the average and 41% (58%) in the high rainfall. On a seasonal scale, the MK test still not aware of trends in 75% of the studied stations, while the ITA shows that 63% (31%) of stations with increasing (decreasing) trends. Studying the rainfall trend, using the ITA and Mann-Kendall methods, in the same area can help to understand past variations and therefore extrapolate the results to other areas with the same climate. This is a crucial step in managing climate-related issues. In addition, the ITA detects hidden sub-trends in the low, medium and high components that the MK test does not, which shows the superiority of the ITA method over MK method. Dans cet article, une étude de tendance, dans deux bassins versants de Coastal-Oran et Macta (Nord-Ouest de l'Algérie), est réalisée en utilisant les précipitations mensuelles et saisonnières au cours de la période 1975–2015 à 38 stations. Les méthodes Mann-Kendall (MK) et Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA) sont appliquées comparativement. L'objectif de cette étude est de vérifier si la capacité de détection de tendance est la même dans les deux méthodes. L'analyse mensuelle des précipitations par le test MK montre que 82% des stations n'ont pas de tendances significatives. En revanche, la méthode ITA détecte des tendances positives (négatives) dans 56 % (33 %) des stations dans la composante de faibles précipitations, 53 % (40 %) dans la moyenne et 41 % (58 %) dans les fortes précipitations. Sur une échelle saisonnière, le test MK ne connaît toujours pas les tendances dans 75% des stations étudiées, tandis que l'ITA montre que 63% (31%) des stations avec des tendances croissantes (décroissantes). Los métodos Mann-Kendall (MK) y Análisis de Tendencias Innovadoras (ITA) se aplican comparativamente. El objetivo de este estudio es verificar si la capacidad de detección de tendencias es la misma en ambos métodos. El análisis mensual de precipitaciones mediante la prueba MK muestra que el 82% de las estaciones no tienen tendencias significativas. Por el contrario, el método ITA detecta tendencias positivas (negativas) en el 56% (33%) de las estaciones en el componente de baja precipitación, el 53% (40%) en el promedio y el 41% (58%) en la de alta precipitación. A escala estacional, la prueba MK aún no conoce las tendencias en el 75% de las estaciones estudiadas, mientras que la ITA muestra que el 63% (31%) de las estaciones tienen tendencias crecientes (decrecientes).
