Social innovation at the bottom of the pyramid: Effects of informality and sustainable affordable innovation

Abstract Until now, the theoretical exploration of informal entrepreneurship's role in driving social innovation has remained largely unaddressed. This study fills this gap by investigating the impact of informal entrepreneurship on social innovation performance through the mediating mechanism of affordable innovation. Using time‐lagged data collected from 264 firms in Vietnam, we find that (1) informal entrepreneurship positively relates to affordable innovation, (2) affordable innovation mediates the relationship between informal entrepreneurship and social innovation performance, and (3) bottom‐of‐the‐pyramid orientation bolsters the relationship between affordable innovation and social innovation performance. These findings contribute to advancing both informal entrepreneurship and social innovation literature.

Résumé Jusqu'à présent, l'exploration théorique du rôle de l'entrepreneuriat informel dans la stimulation de l'innovation sociale est restée largement sans réponse. Cette étude comble cette lacune en étudiant l'impact de l'entrepreneuriat informel sur la performance de l'innovation sociale grâce au mécanisme de médiation de l'innovation abordable. En utilisant des données décalées dans le temps collectées auprès de 264 entreprises au Vietnam, nous constatons que (1) l'entrepreneuriat informel est lié positivement à l'innovation abordable, (2) l'innovation abordable médiatise la relation entre l'entrepreneuriat informel et la performance de l'innovation sociale, et (3) l'orientation vers le bas de la pyramide renforce la relation entre l'innovation abordable et la performance de l'innovation sociale. Ces résultats contribuent à faire progresser à la fois l'entrepreneuriat informel et la littérature sur l'innovation sociale.

Utilizando datos rezagados en el tiempo recopilados de 264 empresas en Vietnam, encontramos que (1) el emprendimiento informal se relaciona positivamente con la innovación asequible, (2) la innovación asequible media la relación entre el emprendimiento informal y el rendimiento de la innovación social, y (3) la orientación de la parte inferior de la pirámide refuerza la relación entre la innovación asequible y el rendimiento de la innovación social. Estos hallazgos contribuyen a avanzar tanto en el emprendimiento informal como en la literatura de innovación social.
