Big data analytics capabilities and MSME innovation and performance: A double mediation model of digital platform and network capabilities

Abstract Drawing on dynamic capabilities and the resource-based view, we propose a conceptual model that encompasses big data analytics capabilities (BDAC), digital platform capabilities and network capabilities, supply chain innovation, and firm performance. We use the structural equation modeling to empirically validate this model on the time-lagged data of 221 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the manufacturing sectors. The empirical results of our data analysis showed that BDAC significantly improved platform and networking capabilities. BDAC also improved supply chain innovation and thus financial performance. Our data indicated that networking capabilities mediated the relationships of both (a) BDAC-supply chain innovation and (b) BDAC-financial performance. Meanwhile, digital platforms mediated only the BDAC-supply chain innovation relationship. The outcomes of sequential mediation confirmed the role of both digital platform and network capabilities and supply chain innovation in the BDAC-firm performance link. Our results provide theoretical implications to operations management and offer practical insights for managers working in manufacturing MSMEs.

Résumé S'appuyant sur les capacités dynamiques et la vue basée sur les ressources, nous proposons un modèle conceptuel qui englobe les capacités d'analyse de mégadonnées (BDAC), les capacités de plate-forme numérique et les capacités de réseau, l'innovation de la chaîne d'approvisionnement et la performance de l'entreprise. Nous utilisons la modélisation des équations structurelles pour valider empiriquement ce modèle sur les données décalées dans le temps de 221 micro, petites et moyennes entreprises (MPME) dans les secteurs manufacturiers. Les résultats empiriques de notre analyse de données ont montré que le BDAC améliorait considérablement les capacités de la plateforme et du réseau. BDAC a également amélioré l'innovation de la chaîne d'approvisionnement et donc la performance financière. Nos données ont indiqué que les capacités de mise en réseau médiatisaient les relations entre (a) l'innovation de la chaîne d'approvisionnement de BDAC et (b) la performance financière de BDAC. Resumen Aprovechando las capacidades dinámicas y la vista basada en recursos, proponemos un modelo conceptual que abarca las capacidades de análisis de big data (BDAC), las capacidades de la plataforma digital y las capacidades de red, la innovación de la cadena de suministro y el rendimiento de la empresa. Utilizamos el modelado de ecuaciones estructurales para validar empíricamente este modelo en los datos de retraso de 221 micro, pequeñas y medianas empresas (MIPYME) en los sectores manufactureros. Los resultados empíricos de nuestro análisis de datos mostraron que BDAC mejoró significativamente las capacidades de la plataforma y la red. BDAC también mejoró la innovación de la cadena de suministro y, por lo tanto, el rendimiento financiero. Nuestros datos indicaron que las capacidades de red mediaron las relaciones de (a) innovación de la cadena de suministro de BDAC y (b) rendimiento financiero de BDAC.
