This article deals with a theoretical research that builds an essay on the impacts of design on consumer society.The intention is to promote a reflection from the systematization of facts and concepts that lead to the interpretation of reality, in order to build new paths for the design process.Therefore, there is a historical search of passive events and processes related to the consumption, behavior and ways of life of the people and as they are reflected in the society of today.The comparative method is also used to verify how parities between consumption and design, within an industrial production context, and explain their possible divergences.Finally the work is concluded with a discussion about the new directions and how possibilities of horizons for the design brings to the society.The final comments are, in fact, a reflection on a stance that we assume while being inserted into a society and builders of a past and future.
