Malacofaunal inventory in Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary, West Bengal, India

The knowledge on the floral and faunal composition of protected areas (PAs) is crucial for formulating suitable conservation plan. In this paper, inventory and species richness of non-marine molluscs of Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary has been made and is for the first time from any PA of West Bengal. A total of 276 specimens belonging to 22 species (10 species of land snails and 12 species of freshwater) of non-marine molluscs (land and freshwater) were collected and examined from this sanctuary. The malacofaunal inventory comprises of nine genera under seven families among land snails and 12 genera & seven families from both gastropods & bivalves under the freshwater forms. As far as species richness is concerned, the family Ariophantidae was found to be dominant among land forms whereas species of the families Thiaridae and Unionidae were dominant among freshwater forms.

Dans cet article, l'inventaire et la richesse en espèces des mollusques non marins du sanctuaire d'oiseaux de Chintamoni Kar ont été réalisés et proviennent pour la première fois de toute AP du Bengale occidental. Au total, 276 spécimens appartenant à 22 espèces (10 espèces d'escargots terrestres et 12 espèces d'eau douce) de mollusques non marins (terrestres et d'eau douce) ont été collectés et examinés dans ce sanctuaire. L'inventaire malacofaunique comprend neuf genres de sept familles parmi les escargots terrestres et 12 genres et sept familles de gastéropodes et de bivalves sous les formes d'eau douce. De este santuario se recogieron y examinaron un total de 276 ejemplares pertenecientes a 22 especies (10 especies de caracoles terrestres y 12 especies de agua dulce) de moluscos no marinos (terrestres y de agua dulce). El inventario malacofaunal comprende nueve géneros bajo siete familias entre caracoles terrestres y 12 géneros y siete familias de gasterópodos y bivalvos bajo las formas de agua dulce. En cuanto a la riqueza de especies, se encontró que la familia Ariophantidae era dominante entre las formas terrestres, mientras que las especies de las familias Thiaridae y Unionidae eran dominantes entre las formas de agua dulce.
