Factors Associated With the Use of Traditional Medicine in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia

Description

Traditional medicine is widely used for the management of various health problems in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to explore factors influencing the use of traditional medicine in Wolaita zone, Southern Ethiopia. In conducting the study, the qualitative method was used, involving 45 in-depth interviews with traditional practitioners, patients and caregivers. Thematic analysis was conducted in analyzing data. The findings revealed that the use of traditional medicine was influenced by five major themes: perceived inefficacy of biomedicine, perceived incurability of some diseases via biomedicine, testimonies of effectiveness of traditional medicine, affordability of traditional medicine and feeling of embarrassment to present medical conditions to practitioners of biomedicine. It was also found that traditional medicine was an accepted medical practice and was likely to remain so despite the expansion of modern healthcare services. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the role and use of traditional medicine as an alternative medical practice and ensure its best possible contribution to the local healthcare system.

La médecine traditionnelle est largement utilisée pour la gestion de divers problèmes de santé en Éthiopie. L'objectif de cette étude était d'explorer les facteurs influençant l'utilisation de la médecine traditionnelle dans la zone de Wolaita, dans le sud de l'Éthiopie. Dans la conduite de l'étude, la méthode qualitative a été utilisée, impliquant 45 entretiens approfondis avec des praticiens traditionnels, des patients et des soignants. L'analyse thématique a été menée dans l'analyse des données. Les résultats ont révélé que l'utilisation de la médecine traditionnelle était influencée par cinq thèmes principaux : l'inefficacité perçue de la biomédecine, l'incurabilité perçue de certaines maladies via la biomédecine, les témoignages d'efficacité de la médecine traditionnelle, l'abordabilité de la médecine traditionnelle et le sentiment d'embarras de présenter des conditions médicales aux praticiens de la biomédecine. En la realización del estudio, se utilizó el método cualitativo, que involucró 45 entrevistas en profundidad con profesionales tradicionales, pacientes y cuidadores. El análisis temático se llevó a cabo al analizar los datos.
