Relational capital and strategic orientations as antecedents of innovation: evidence from Mexican SMEs

Abstract Questions "Where does innovation initiate in a company?" and "How can a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) leverage its different resources to enhance its innovation capabilities to outperform its competitors?" remain unanswered to date. Accordingly, this study examined the relationship between the firm's relational capital and fundamental strategic orientations that a firm can adopt and how these different orientations affect innovation and organizational performance. The target sample included 360 Mexican SMEs who completed a pen-and-pencil questionnaire conducted at the four main cities of this country. Structural equation modeling was performed, and results revealed a strong positive effect of relational capital over all four strategic orientations considered in this study. However, mixed findings of strategic orientations and innovation were obtained. Although market and entrepreneurial orientation positively influenced innovation, a negative relationship was found between learning orientation and innovation and a nonsignificant relationship between technology orientation and innovation. As expected, innovation positively influenced the performance of SMEs. This study offers essential academic contributions and interesting managerial insights to improve performance using relational capital through innovation and strategic orientations. Therefore, we propose relational capital as an underexploited resource and a source of innovation for SMEs.

Les questions abstraites « Où l'innovation commence-t-elle dans une entreprise ? » et « Comment une petite et moyenne entreprise (PME) peut-elle tirer parti de ses différentes ressources pour améliorer ses capacités d'innovation afin de surpasser ses concurrents ? » restent sans réponse à ce jour. En conséquence, cette étude a examiné la relation entre le capital relationnel de l'entreprise et les orientations stratégiques fondamentales qu'une entreprise peut adopter et comment ces différentes orientations affectent l'innovation et la performance organisationnelle. L'échantillon cible comprenait 360 PME mexicaines qui ont rempli un questionnaire à la plume et au crayon mené dans les quatre principales villes de ce pays. La modélisation des équations structurelles a été réalisée et les résultats ont révélé un fort effet positif du capital relationnel sur les quatre orientations stratégiques considérées dans cette étude. Cependant, des résultats mitigés d'orientations stratégiques et d'innovation ont été obtenus. Bien que l'orientation vers le marché et l'entrepreneuriat ait influencé positivement l'innovation, une relation négative a été trouvée entre l'orientation vers l'apprentissage et l'innovation et une relation non significative entre l'orientation vers la technologie et l'innovation. Comme prévu, l'innovation a influencé positivement la performance des PME. En consecuencia, este estudio examinó la relación entre el capital relacional de la empresa y las orientaciones estratégicas fundamentales que una empresa puede adoptar y cómo estas diferentes orientaciones afectan la innovación y el desempeño organizacional. La muestra objetivo incluyó a 360 pymes mexicanas que completaron un cuestionario a lápiz y bolígrafo realizado en las cuatro principales ciudades de este país. Se realizó un modelado de ecuaciones estructurales y los resultados revelaron un fuerte efecto positivo del capital relacional en las cuatro orientaciones estratégicas consideradas en este estudio. Sin embargo, se obtuvieron resultados mixtos de orientaciones estratégicas e innovación. Aunque la orientación al mercado y al emprendimiento influyeron positivamente en la innovación, se encontró una relación negativa entre la orientación al aprendizaje y la innovación y una relación no significativa entre la orientación a la tecnología y la innovación. Como era de esperar, la innovación influyó positivamente en el rendimiento de las pymes. Este estudio ofrece contribuciones académicas esenciales e interesantes conocimientos gerenciales para mejorar el rendimiento utilizando el capital relacional a través de la innovación y las orientaciones estratégicas.
