The Use of English Pragmatic Markers by Learners of English from Different Linguacultural Backgrounds

Abstract This study compared the uses of the textual and interpersonal functions of English pragmatic markers ( PM s) by learners of English as a foreign language ( EFL ) from three different linguacultural backgrounds in two spoken genres. Thirty Chinese, 30 Thai and 30 Indonesian EFL learners were recruited to participate in semi-structured interviews and dyadic conversations. Significant differences in the ways in which the participants used textual and interpersonal functions in the two spoken genres were found, whereas there were significant differences in the use of textual functions by speakers from different linguacultural backgrounds. The spoken genres and the linguacultural backgrounds mainly affected the more frequently used functions, and had no effect on the functions that were used less frequently. Furthermore, the spoken genre had a greater effect on the different uses of the functions of English PM s than did the linguacultural backgrounds.

Résumé Cette étude a comparé les utilisations des fonctions textuelles et interpersonnelles des marqueurs pragmatiques anglais ( PM) par des apprenants de l'anglais langue étrangère ( EFL ) de trois origines linguistiques différentes dans deux genres parlés. Trente apprenants chinois, 30 thaïlandais et 30 indonésiens EFL ont été recrutés pour participer à des entretiens semi-structurés et à des conversations dyadiques. Des différences significatives dans la façon dont les participants utilisaient les fonctions textuelles et interpersonnelles dans les deux genres parlés ont été trouvées, alors qu'il y avait des différences significatives dans l'utilisation des fonctions textuelles par des locuteurs de différents milieux linguistiques. Treinta estudiantes chinos, 30 tailandeses y 30 indonesios de EFL fueron reclutados para participar en entrevistas semiestructuradas y conversaciones diádicas. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en las formas en que los participantes usaban las funciones textuales e interpersonales en los dos géneros hablados, mientras que hubo diferencias significativas en el uso de las funciones textuales por parte de hablantes de diferentes orígenes lingüísticos y culturales. Los géneros hablados y los antecedentes lingüísticos y culturales afectaron principalmente a las funciones más utilizadas y no tuvieron ningún efecto sobre las funciones que se usaban con menos frecuencia.
