Religious and Socio-cultural Influences on the Pakistani Wedding Invitation

Abstract The Wedding Invitation is one of the significant text genres. Following genre analysis approach and discourse analysis (DA), the present research analysed the wedding invitation genres in Pakistan to explore generic structures, as well as the role played by the broader socio-cultural norms and values in shaping this genre. Therefore, a corpus of 50 wedding invitations in Urdu and English was randomly selected from cards received from January to June 2018. The results of this genre analysis revealed seven obligatory and one optional move in Urdu, while six obligatory and one optional move in English invitations. Through discourse analysis, it has been uncovered how religious association and cultural influence in Pakistani society shape textual selection. Little variation was displayed in the invitations of the two languages, presumably due to regional cultural reflections and recent influence of western values. A comparison of Pakistani and UK invitations showed differences not only in move selection but also in lexical choices which are shaped by the respective cultures.

Résumé L'invitation au mariage est l'un des genres de texte importants. Suite à l'approche d'analyse de genre et à l'analyse du discours (AD), la présente recherche a analysé les genres d'invitation au mariage au Pakistan pour explorer les structures génériques, ainsi que le rôle joué par les normes et les valeurs socioculturelles plus larges dans la formation de ce genre. Par conséquent, un corpus de 50 invitations de mariage en ourdou et en anglais a été sélectionné au hasard parmi les cartes reçues de janvier à juin 2018. Les résultats de cette analyse de genre ont révélé sept mouvements obligatoires et un mouvement facultatif en ourdou, tandis que six mouvements obligatoires et un mouvement facultatif dans les invitations en anglais. Grâce à l'analyse du discours, il a été découvert comment l'association religieuse et l'influence culturelle dans la société pakistanaise façonnent la sélection textuelle. Siguiendo el enfoque del análisis de género y el análisis del discurso (DA), la presente investigación analizó los géneros de invitación de boda en Pakistán para explorar las estructuras genéricas, así como el papel desempeñado por las normas y valores socioculturales más amplios en la configuración de este género. Por lo tanto, se seleccionó aleatoriamente un corpus de 50 invitaciones de boda en urdu e inglés de las tarjetas recibidas de enero a junio de 2018. Los resultados de este análisis de género revelaron siete movimientos obligatorios y uno opcional en urdu, mientras que seis obligatorios y uno opcional en invitaciones en inglés. A través del análisis del discurso, se ha descubierto cómo la asociación religiosa y la influencia cultural en la sociedad pakistaní dan forma a la selección textual.
