Abstract In this chapter we develop a theoretical-conceptual model on young farmers' entrepreneurship in multi-functional, diverse and resilient sustainable rural development. Our aim is supported by policies fostering social and economic opportunities that target both rural youth and rural female entrepreneurship. The European Green Deal and associated targeted initiatives offer new avenues for agriculture, rural development, and social innovation aiming at vulnerable youth groups in rural communities such as rural young people Not in Employment, not in Education or Training (NEETs), or at setting up new, viable, and attractive businesses for overcoming negative representations about farming among rural younger generations. We identify and explain the obstacles and the policy opportunities for stronger rural youth entrepreneurship and their contribution to sustainable rural development. We make this by considering the concepts of sustainability and resilience associated with the multifunctionality and heterogeneity of rural areas in the context of the Industry 4.0 uprising. Altogether, these elements can determine young people's level of involvement in the farming sector and their willingness to stay in rural areas, including among the most vulnerable ones. We also provide a set of research avenues to overcome traditional farming approaches and policy recommendations fostering entrepreneurship among rural young people.

Résumé Dans ce chapitre, nous développons un modèle théorique-conceptuel sur l'entrepreneuriat des jeunes agriculteurs dans le développement rural durable multifonctionnel, diversifié et résilient. Notre objectif est soutenu par des politiques favorisant les opportunités sociales et économiques qui ciblent à la fois les jeunes ruraux et l'entrepreneuriat féminin rural. Le pacte vert pour l'Europe et les initiatives ciblées associées offrent de nouvelles voies pour l'agriculture, le développement rural et l'innovation sociale visant les groupes de jeunes vulnérables dans les communautés rurales, tels que les jeunes ruraux sans emploi, sans éducation ou formation (NEET), ou à créer de nouvelles entreprises viables et attrayantes pour surmonter les représentations négatives de l'agriculture parmi les jeunes générations rurales. Nous identifions et expliquons les obstacles et les opportunités politiques pour renforcer l'entrepreneuriat des jeunes ruraux et leur contribution au développement rural durable. Nuestro objetivo está respaldado por políticas que fomentan oportunidades sociales y económicas dirigidas tanto a la juventud rural como al emprendimiento femenino rural. El Pacto Verde Europeo y las iniciativas específicas asociadas ofrecen nuevas vías para la agricultura, el desarrollo rural y la innovación social dirigidas a los grupos juveniles vulnerables en las comunidades rurales, como los jóvenes rurales que no tienen empleo, ni educación ni formación (ninis), o para establecer empresas nuevas, viables y atractivas para superar las representaciones negativas sobre la agricultura entre las generaciones rurales más jóvenes. Identificamos y explicamos los obstáculos y las oportunidades políticas para un emprendimiento juvenil rural más fuerte y su contribución al desarrollo rural sostenible.
