The impact of wind and geothermal energy consumption on economic growth and financial development: evidence on selected countries

Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the impacts of wind and geothermal energy consumption on economic growth and financial development over the period 2016:M1 and 2020:M11. The data obtained from Germany, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Turkey, and the United States of America, which consume wind and geothermal energy, were utilized in the research study. To this end, after determining the cointegration relationship between the variables, the long-term elasticity coefficients were estimated by employing the FMOLS (2000) and DOLS (2001) models. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that geothermal energy consumption had a positive impact on financial development. Nonetheless, wind energy had no impact on financial development, whereas it had a negative impact on economic growth. According to the Dumitrescu–Hurlin causality test results, it was determined that a unilateral causality existed from wind and geothermal energy consumption to economic growth. These obtained findings, in favor of the conservative hypothesis, yielded important signals for investments to be made in the renewable energy sector as well as policymakers.

Résumé L'objectif de cette étude est d'étudier les impacts de la consommation d'énergie éolienne et géothermique sur la croissance économique et le développement financier sur la période 2016 :M1 et 2020 :M11. Les données obtenues de l'Allemagne, de l'Islande, de l'Italie, du Japon, du Mexique, de la Nouvelle-Zélande, du Portugal, de la Turquie et des États-Unis d'Amérique, qui consomment de l'énergie éolienne et géothermique, ont été utilisées dans l'étude de recherche. À cette fin, après avoir déterminé la relation de cointégration entre les variables, les coefficients d'élasticité à long terme ont été estimés en utilisant les modèles FMOLS (2000) et DOLS (2001). À la suite de l'analyse, il a été déterminé que la consommation d'énergie géothermique avait un impact positif sur le développement financier. Néanmoins, l'énergie éolienne n'a eu aucun impact sur le développement financier, alors qu'elle a eu un impact négatif sur la croissance économique. Los datos obtenidos de Alemania, Islandia, Italia, Japón, México, Nueva Zelanda, Portugal, Turquía y los Estados Unidos de América, que consumen energía eólica y geotérmica, se utilizaron en el estudio de investigación. Para ello, tras determinar la relación de cointegración entre las variables, se estimaron los coeficientes de elasticidad a largo plazo empleando los modelos FMOLS (2000) y DOLS (2001). Como resultado del análisis, se determinó que el consumo de energía geotérmica tuvo un impacto positivo en el desarrollo financiero. Sin embargo, la energía eólica no tuvo ningún impacto en el desarrollo financiero, mientras que tuvo un impacto negativo en el crecimiento económico. De acuerdo con los resultados de la prueba de causalidad de Dumitrescu-Hurlin, se determinó que existía una causalidad unilateral desde el consumo de energía eólica y geotérmica hasta el crecimiento económico.
