Nonendoscopic predictors of large esophageal varices

Abstract Background There is a particular need for noninvasive predictors of esophageal varices (EV) that might help reduce medical, social, and economic costs. Our study aimed at studying the noninvasive predictors of EV. Patients and methods A total of 100 live cirrhotic patients with compensated liver functions were subjected to full clinical, laboratory, and imaging investigations. Results A total of 55% of the studied groups showed EV; 39% showed high-grade EV (grades III, IV, and V). Platelet count and platelet count/splenic diameter ratio have the highest accuracy and specificity for predicting EV, whereas platelet count/splenic diameter ratio has the highest predictive accuracy for the presence of large EV. Conclusion The platelet count/splenic diameter ratio can predict the presence of EV and large-sized EV.

Résumé Contexte Il existe un besoin particulier de prédicteurs non invasifs des varices œsophagiennes (VE) qui pourraient aider à réduire les coûts médicaux, sociaux et économiques. Notre étude visait à étudier les prédicteurs non invasifs de la VE. Patients et méthodes Un total de 100 patients cirrhotiques vivants avec des fonctions hépatiques compensées ont été soumis à des examens cliniques, de laboratoire et d'imagerie complets. Résultats Un total de 55 % des groupes étudiés présentaient une VE ; 39 % présentaient une VE de haute qualité (grades III, IV et V). La numération plaquettaire et le rapport numération plaquettaire/diamètre splénique ont la plus grande précision et spécificité pour prédire la VE, tandis que le rapport numération plaquettaire/diamètre splénique a la plus grande précision prédictive pour la présence de grandes VE. Pacientes y métodos Un total de 100 pacientes cirróticos vivos con funciones hepáticas compensadas se sometieron a investigaciones clínicas, de laboratorio y de imágenes completas. Resultados Un total del 55% de los grupos estudiados mostró EV; el 39% mostró EV de alto grado (grados III, IV y V).
