La memoria ha sido tradicionalmente definida como una capacidad psicológica que permite a los sujetos almacenar información "en la mente" con el objetivo de recuperarla en un momento posterior. Memory has traditionally been defined as a psychological capacity that allows subjects to store information "in the mind" with the aim of retrieving it at a later time. This definition, based on a Cartesian perspective, conceives of cognition as internal information processing. In recent years, 5E paradigms (i.e., embodied, extended, enactive, embedded, ecological) have emerged as an alternative to orthodox perspectives and have emphasized the constitutive role that the body and environment have in cognition. By defining cognition as adaptive behavior, these paradigms have questioned the scope of certain basic concepts in cognitive science, such as "agency," "meaning," or "mental representation." In this paper, I will present an ecological-active model of memory based on the Material Engagement Theory (Prezioso and Alessandroni, 2022; see also Malafouris and Koukouti, 2018) and discuss its implications for research in psychology. Specifically, I will defend: (i) that more than an internal capacity, "memory" refers to a type of activity that subjects carry out when they interact in and with the world; (ii) that "remembering" does not involve encoding, storing and retrieving mental contents, but updating specific forms of interaction with material culture; and (iii) that objects (e.g., a cup or a spoon) are full-fledged cognitive agents, as they motivate us to re-instantiate forms of material involvement that we have experienced on different time scales. The analysis of these three argument nodes will highlight the urgent need for studies that seriously consider the cognitive ecologies where subjects remember. Finally, I will address the relationships of the proposed model with other contemporary contributions on the development of conceptual thinking and intentional understanding (Alessandroni, 2021, 2023; Vietri et al., 2022).Translated Description (French)

Ces dernières années, les paradigmes 5E (i.e., embodied, extended, enactive, embedded, ecological) ont émergé comme une alternative aux perspectives orthodoxes et ont souligné le rôle constitutif que le corps et l'environnement ont dans la cognition. En définissant la cognition comme un comportement adaptatif, ces paradigmes ont remis en question la portée de certains concepts de base en sciences cognitives, tels que « agence », « sens » ou « représentation mentale ». Dans cet exposé, je présenterai un modèle éco-inactif de la mémoire basé sur la Théorie de l'Engagement Matériel (Précieux et Alessandroni, 2022 ; voir aussi Malafouris et Koukouti, 2018) et je discuterai de ses implications pour la recherche en psychologie.
