Understanding the role of cross-language transfer of phonological awareness in emergent Hindi–English biliteracy acquisition

Abstract This study examined within and cross-language relations, and specifically, the role of phonological awareness (PA) skills in reading among young Hindi-speaking children (L1) who were learning to read English (L2) in Delhi, India. Data was collected from 143 children in Grades 1 and 2 using measures validated for this population. The analyses examined the associations between L1 and L2 PA and decoding, both within and across the two languages. The results showed that PA skills within each language significantly predicted decoding in that language. Furthermore, there was evidence of cross-language transfer with Hindi PA significantly predicting English word reading even after controlling for English PA. English PA also significantly predicted Hindi decoding, however, these effects decreased once Hindi PA was added to the model. These findings emphasize the important role that both L1 and L2 PA plays in reading among emergent Hindi–English bilinguals. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings on literacy instruction in India are discussed.

Résumé Cette étude a examiné les relations à l'intérieur et entre les langues, et plus particulièrement, le rôle des compétences de conscience phonologique (AP) dans la lecture chez les jeunes enfants de langue hindi (L1) qui apprenaient à lire l'anglais (L2) à Delhi, en Inde. Les données ont été recueillies auprès de 143 enfants de 1re et 2e année à l'aide de mesures validées pour cette population. Les analyses ont examiné les associations entre l'AP L1 et L2 et le décodage, à la fois à l'intérieur et à travers les deux langues. Les résultats ont montré que les compétences en PA dans chaque langue prédisaient de manière significative le décodage dans cette langue. Resumen Este estudio examinó las relaciones dentro y entre idiomas, y específicamente, el papel de las habilidades de conciencia fonológica (PA) en la lectura entre los niños pequeños de habla hindi (L1) que estaban aprendiendo a leer inglés (L2) en Delhi, India. Los datos se recopilaron de 143 niños en los grados 1 y 2 utilizando medidas validadas para esta población. Los análisis examinaron las asociaciones entre L1 y L2 PA y la decodificación, tanto dentro como entre los dos idiomas. Los resultados mostraron que las habilidades de PA dentro de cada idioma predijeron significativamente la decodificación en ese idioma.
