Résumé Au XVIIIe siècle, les naturalistes européens et américains ont mené différentes pratiques de reconnaissance de la nature, dans lesquelles la collecte et l'étude d'animaux vivants et morts ont permis d'obtenir et de vérifier différentes connaissances utiles pour la science et l'histoire naturelle. La possibilité que les spécimens aient été utilisés comme objets d'étude, ainsi que comme instruments d'observation, a généré dans les collections d'histoire naturelle une dimension qui peut aujourd'hui être problématisée par l'épistémologie et l'ontologie. Cet article montre ce phénomène, à partir de l'analyse de certaines pratiques effectuées par le naturaliste José Antonio Alzate en Nouvelle-Espagne.
