Collaborative entrepreneurship and social innovation performance: Effects of institutional support and social legitimacy

Abstract To date, our understanding of how collaborative entrepreneurship influences social innovation performance is limited. In this article, we developed and tested a model that examines the effect of collaborative entrepreneurship on social innovation performance and introduced two boundary conditions of this relationship. Time‐lag data collected from 261 entrepreneurial firms in Vietnam yielded the following results. First, collaborative entrepreneurship positively influences social innovation. Second, institutional support boosts the effect of collaborative entrepreneurship on social innovation performance. Finally, the effect of collaborative entrepreneurship on social innovation performance is contingent on social legitimacy such that at high levels of social legitimacy, the effect of collaborative entrepreneurship on social innovation performance is amplified. These findings contribute to the collaborative entrepreneurship and social innovation literature and offer implications for practice.

Résumé À ce jour, notre compréhension de la façon dont l'entrepreneuriat collaboratif influence la performance de l'innovation sociale est limitée. Dans cet article, nous avons développé et testé un modèle qui examine l'effet de l'entrepreneuriat collaboratif sur la performance de l'innovation sociale et introduit deux conditions limites de cette relation. Les données dedécalage temporel collectées auprès de 261 entreprises entrepreneuriales au Vietnam ont donné les résultats suivants. Tout d'abord, l'entrepreneuriat collaboratif influence positivement l'innovation sociale. Deuxièmement, le soutien institutionnel renforce l'effet de l'entrepreneuriat collaboratif sur la performance de l'innovation sociale. Resumen Hasta la fecha, nuestra comprensión de cómo el emprendimiento colaborativo influye en el rendimiento de la innovación social es limitada. En este artículo, desarrollamos y probamos un modelo que examina el efecto del emprendimiento colaborativo en el desempeño de la innovación social e introdujimos dos condiciones límite de esta relación. Los datos dedesfase temporal recopilados de 261 empresas emprendedoras en Vietnam arrojaron los siguientes resultados. En primer lugar, el emprendimiento colaborativo influye positivamente en la innovación social. En segundo lugar, el apoyo institucional aumenta el efecto del emprendimiento colaborativo en el rendimiento de la innovación social. Finalmente, el efecto del emprendimiento colaborativo en el rendimiento de la innovación social depende de la legitimidad social, de modo que a altos niveles de legitimidad social, se amplifica el efecto del emprendimiento colaborativo en el rendimiento de la innovación social.
