Cytogenotoxic and antimicrobial effects of Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) alcoholic extracts

Due to their multifunctionality and the numerous fields of applicability, insects are extensively studied today for both their biomedical and nutritional properties. In the current study the cytogenotoxic and antimicrobial potential of ethanol and methanol extracts of Nezara viridula (Linnaeus 1758) was evaluated using the Allium test, respectively the disk diffusion test. A mitostimulatory effect of the extracts of N. viridula and a variation of the cytogenotoxic activity of the extracts in a gender-dependent manner was noticed. As well, significant variations of the mitotic index were determined through the type of solvent used and the concentration of the extracts. High frequency chromosomal aberrations and mitotic abnormalities were recorded with high concentration ethanolic extracts. Following the testing of four standard bacterial strains and two standard yeast strains, a slightly antimicrobial activity was observed when compared to control. The use of invasive species in such studies opens up new perspectives on the potential of organisms considered harmful.

Dans la présente étude, le potentiel cytogénotoxique et antimicrobien des extraits d'éthanol et de méthanol de Nezara viridula (Linnaeus 1758) a été évalué à l'aide du test Allium, respectivement du test de diffusion sur disque. Un effet mitostimulateur des extraits de N. viridula et une variation de l'activité cytogénotoxique des extraits en fonction du genre ont été remarqués. De plus, des variations significatives de l'indice mitotique ont été déterminées par le type de solvant utilisé et la concentration des extraits. Des aberrations chromosomiques et des anomalies mitotiques de haute fréquence ont été enregistrées avec des extraits éthanoliques à haute concentration. Debido a su multifuncionalidad y a los numerosos campos de aplicación, los insectos son ampliamente estudiados hoy en día tanto por sus propiedades biomédicas como nutricionales. En el estudio actual, el potencial citogenotóxico y antimicrobiano de los extractos de etanol y metanol de Nezara viridula (Linnaeus 1758) se evaluó mediante la prueba de Allium, respectivamente, la prueba de difusión en disco. Se observó un efecto mitostimulador de los extractos de N. viridula y una variación de la actividad citogenotóxica de los extractos de una manera dependiente del género. Además, se determinaron variaciones significativas del índice mitótico a través del tipo de disolvente utilizado y la concentración de los extractos. Se registraron aberraciones cromosómicas de alta frecuencia y anomalías mitóticas con extractos etanólicos de alta concentración. Después de la prueba de cuatro cepas bacterianas estándar y dos cepas de levadura estándar, se observó una actividad ligeramente antimicrobiana en comparación con el control.
