This paper builds on existing theoretical and empirical studies in the areas of family business and entrepreneurship.It uses Dubin´s theory building framework to propose a model for conducting research of family businesses and its linkage to entrepreneurial activities in Mexico.This works starts by describing the concepts of family business and explains the importance that these definitions can have on the variables to be included in the research.After that, the paper explains how the concept of "familiness" relates to the essence definition of family business.Using the resource-based view (RBV), agency theory, and social capital theories we describe how social capital resources are the basis for building firm capabilities and competitive advantages that influence firm's performances.Based on this perspective, a theoretical model, laws of interaction, a set of propositions and suggestions for further research are provided.

Utiliza el marco de construcción de la teoría de Dubin para proponer un modelo para llevar a cabo la investigación de las empresas familiares y su vinculación con las actividades empresariales en México. Este trabajo comienza describiendo los conceptos de empresa familiar y explica la importancia que estas definiciones pueden tener en las variables que se incluirán en la investigación. Después de eso, el documento explica cómo el concepto de "familiaridad" se relaciona con la definición de esencia de la empresa familiar. Utilizando la visión basada en recursos (RBV), la teoría de la agencia y las teorías del capital social, describimos cómo los recursos de capital social son la base para desarrollar las capacidades de la empresa y las ventajas competitivas que influyen en el desempeño de la empresa. A partir de esta perspectiva, se proporciona un modelo teórico, leyes de interacción, un conjunto de propuestas y sugerencias para futuras investigaciones.
