Perceived social support and psychological well-being among patients with epilepsy

This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the relationship between perceived social support and psychological well-being in patients with epilepsy. The study was conducted, from January to December 2019, after ethical approval from the research ethical committee of FMU (Faisalabad Medical University, Faisalabad). A sample of 90 patients, attending free epilepsy camp in Mujahid Hospital Madina Town Faisalabad and psychiatry OPD of government General hospital G.M. Abad Faisalabad, was collected by using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Urdu version). Moreover, Psychological well-being was assessed by Ryff Scale. Statistical analysis was done through data Correlation and T-test SPSS version 21. A positive correlation between psychological well-being and perceived social support in epileptic patients was established (p<0.001). This study concludes that on the one hand, strong social support enhances psychological well-being, while, on the other hand, both these factors collaboratively improve the mental health of PWE, thus promoting a better outcome.

Cette étude transversale visait à explorer la relation entre le soutien social perçu et le bien-être psychologique chez les patients épileptiques. L'étude a été menée, de janvier à décembre 2019, après approbation éthique du comité d'éthique de la recherche de la FMU (Faisalabad Medical University, Faisalabad). Un échantillon de 90 patients, participant à un camp d'épilepsie gratuit à l'hôpital Mujahid de la ville de Madina à Faisalabad et à l'OPD de psychiatrie de l'hôpital général gouvernemental G.M. Abad Faisalabad, a été recueilli en utilisant l'échelle multidimensionnelle du soutien social perçu (version ourdou). De plus, le bien-être psychologique a été évalué par l'échelle de Ryff. El estudio se realizó, de enero a diciembre de 2019, después de la aprobación ética del comité ético de investigación de FMU (Faisalabad Medical University, Faisalabad). Se recolectó una muestra de 90 pacientes, que asistían al campamento gratuito de epilepsia en el Hospital Mujahid Madina Town Faisalabad y al OPD de psiquiatría del hospital general gubernamental G.M. Abad Faisalabad, utilizando la Escala Multidimensional de Apoyo Social Percibido (versión en urdu). Además, el bienestar psicológico se evaluó mediante la escala Ryff. El análisis estadístico se realizó a través de la correlación de datos y la prueba T SPSS versión 21. Se estableció una correlación positiva entre el bienestar psicológico y el apoyo social percibido en pacientes epilépticos (p<0,001).
