Abstract. The objective of this work is to analyse the density structure of the continental forearc in the northern segment of the 1960 Mw 9.6 Valdivia earthquake. Regional 2D and local 3D density models have been obtained from available gravity data in the area, complemented with new gravimetric stations. Models are constrained by independent geophysical/geological information and new TEM and MT soundings. The results show a segmentation of the continental wedge along and perpendicular to the margin, highlighting a high density anomaly, below the onshore forearc basin, that limits the Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic metamorphic basement in the region where Chaitenia terrain has been proposed. A progressive landward shift of this anomaly correlates with the high slip patch of the giant 1960 Mw 9.6 Valdivia earthquake. Based on these results, we propose that the horizontal extension of the less rigid basement units conforming the marine wedge and Coastal Cordillera domain could modify the process of stress loading during the interseismic periods, and also that changes in position and extension of the Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic accretionary complex could be linked with the frictional properties of the interplate boundary. This analysis provides new evidence of the role of the overriding plate structure on the seismotectonic process in subduction zones.

Résumé. L'objectif de ce travail est d'analyser la structure de densité de l'avant arc continental dans le segment nord du séisme de Valdivia de 1960 Mw 9.6. Des modèles de densité 2D et 3D locaux ont été obtenus à partir des données gravimétriques disponibles dans la région, complétées par de nouvelles stations gravimétriques. Les modèles sont contraints par des informations géophysiques/géologiques indépendantes et de nouveaux sondages TEM et MT. Les résultats montrent une segmentation du coin continental le long et perpendiculairement à la marge, mettant en évidence une anomalie de haute densité, sous le bassin de l'avant-arc terrestre, qui limite le socle métamorphique du Paléozoïque tardif et du Mésozoïque précoce dans la région où le terrain de Chaitenia a été proposé. Un déplacement progressif vers la terre de cette anomalie est en corrélation avec la zone de glissement élevé du séisme géant de Valdivia de 1960 Mw 9.6. Resumen. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la estructura de densidad del antebrazo continental en el segmento norte del terremoto de Valdivia de 1960 Mw 9,6. Se han obtenido modelos de densidad 2D regionales y 3D locales a partir de los datos de gravedad disponibles en la zona, complementados con nuevas estaciones gravimétricas. Los modelos están limitados por información geofísica/geológica independiente y nuevos sondeos TEM y MT. Los resultados muestran una segmentación de la cuña continental a lo largo y perpendicular al margen, destacando una anomalía de alta densidad, por debajo de la cuenca del antebrazo terrestre, que limita el basamento metamórfico del Paleozoico Tardío-Mesozoico Temprano en la región donde se ha propuesto el terreno de Chaitenia. Un desplazamiento progresivo hacia tierra de esta anomalía se correlaciona con el parche de alto deslizamiento del gigantesco terremoto de 1960 de 9,6 MW en Valdivia.
