Abstract Background The aim of this work is to develop guidelines for health care professionals in the giant cell arteritis diagnosis and management, based on patients' stratification and targeted outcome measures. Results Fourteen expert panel had completed the two rounds surveys. After the end of round two, twenty three recommendations were released distributed on 8 domains. The percentage of the agreement on the recommendations was 76.9% to 100%. All 23 key questions were answered at the end of the second round with agreement upon. Conclusion Patient stratification facilitate the initiation of an appropriate management approach for patients with giant cell arteritis aiming at achieving targeted disease remission state and prevention of visual loss and/or development of ischaemic events. Treat to Target approach is a new concept in giant cell arteritis management which aims to provide tight control to achieve and maintain disease remission. This work defined the treatment targets in relation to the disease stage.

Résumé Contexte L'objectif de ce travail est d'élaborer des lignes directrices pour les professionnels de la santé dans le diagnostic et la prise en charge de l'artérite à cellules géantes, en fonction de la stratification des patients et des mesures de résultats ciblées. Résultats Quatorze groupes d'experts ont répondu aux deux enquêtes. Après la fin du deuxième tour, vingt-trois recommandations ont été diffusées réparties sur 8 domaines. Le pourcentage d'accord sur les recommandations était de 76,9% à 100%. Les 23 questions clés ont été répondues à la fin du deuxième tour avec accord. Conclusion La stratification des patients facilite l'initiation d'une approche de prise en charge appropriée pour les patients atteints d'artérite à cellules géantes visant à atteindre un état de rémission ciblé de la maladie et à prévenir la perte visuelle et/ou le développement d'événements ischémiques. Resumen Antecedentes El objetivo de este trabajo es desarrollar pautas para los profesionales de la salud en el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la arteritis de células gigantes, basadas en la estratificación de los pacientes y las medidas de resultado específicas. Resultados Catorce paneles de expertos habían completado las dos rondas de encuestas. Después del final de la segunda ronda, se publicaron veintitrés recomendaciones distribuidas en 8 dominios. El porcentaje de acuerdo sobre las recomendaciones fue del 76,9% al 100%. Las 23 preguntas clave se respondieron al final de la segunda ronda con un acuerdo. Conclusión La estratificación de los pacientes facilita el inicio de un enfoque de manejo adecuado para los pacientes con arteritis de células gigantes con el objetivo de lograr un estado de remisión de la enfermedad específico y la prevención de la pérdida visual y/o el desarrollo de eventos isquémicos.
