Internal determinants of export performance of small and medium enterprises in Vietnam

The aim of this study is to investigate the internal determinants of the export performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. Building upon the Resource-Based Theory, hypotheses on the internal determinants of export performance of SMEs in Vietnam are proposed. A sample of 569 SMEs with export activities in Vietnam during the year 2018 is collected to carry out this research. To ensure the reliability of data, this study excludes joint venture companies due to ambiguous participation between the government and the foreign element. A linear regression approach is applied along with the Robust standard errors method to test the proposed hypotheses of the research model. In addition, this study also examines several control variables in the model, including cultural distance, geographic distance, economic distance, and institutional distance. Estimation results reveal that firm size, firm industry, and research and development (R&D) have a positive and statistically significant impact on the export performance of SMEs in Vietnam, while the manager's gender has a negative and statistically significant influence on the export performance of these firms. Based on the empirical findings, several governance implications are provided for managers to improve the export performance of their SMEs in Vietnam.

L'objectif de cette étude est d'étudier les déterminants internes de la performance à l'exportation des petites et moyennes entreprises (PME) au Vietnam. En s'appuyant sur la théorie basée sur les ressources, des hypothèses sur les déterminants internes de la performance à l'exportation des PME au Vietnam sont proposées. Un échantillon de 569 PME ayant des activités d'exportation au Vietnam au cours de l'année 2018 est collecté pour mener à bien cette recherche. Pour assurer la fiabilité des données, cette étude exclut les coentreprises en raison d'une participation ambiguë entre le gouvernement et l'élément étranger. Une approche de régression linéaire est appliquée avec la méthode des erreurs-types Robustes pour tester les hypothèses proposées du modèle de recherche. En outre, cette étude examine également plusieurs variables de contrôle dans le modèle, notamment la distance culturelle, la distance géographique, la distance économique et la distance institutionnelle. Sobre la base de la Teoría Basada en Recursos, se proponen hipótesis sobre los determinantes internos del desempeño de las exportaciones de las PYMES en Vietnam. Para llevar a cabo esta investigación se recoge una muestra de 569 pymes con actividades de exportación en Vietnam durante el año 2018. Para garantizar la fiabilidad de los datos, este estudio excluye a las empresas conjuntas debido a la participación ambigua entre el gobierno y el elemento extranjero. Se aplica un enfoque de regresión lineal junto con el método de errores estándar robustos para probar las hipótesis propuestas del modelo de investigación. Además, este estudio también examina varias variables de control en el modelo, incluida la distancia cultural, la distancia geográfica, la distancia económica y la distancia institucional. Los resultados de la estimación revelan que el tamaño de la empresa, la industria de la empresa y la investigación y desarrollo (I + D) tienen un impacto positivo y estadísticamente significativo en el desempeño de las exportaciones de las PYMES en Vietnam, mientras que el género del gerente tiene una influencia negativa y estadísticamente significativa en el desempeño de las exportaciones de estas empresas.
