The organisational impact of agility: a systematic literature review

Abstract This paper reviews the literature on agility and its relationship with organisational performance using a sample of 249 recent empirical studies from 1998 to February 2024. We find support for a relatively strong and consistent contribution of different aspects of agility to organisational performance. Our analysis highlights numerous salient issues in this literature in terms of the theoretical background, research design, and contextual factors in agility-performance research. On this basis, we propose relevant recommendations for future research to address these issues, specifically focusing on the role of the board of directors and their leadership in fostering organisational agility.

Résumé Cet article passe en revue la littérature sur l'agilité et sa relation avec la performance organisationnelle à l'aide d'un échantillon de 249 études empiriques récentes de 1998 à février 2024. Nous trouvons un soutien pour une contribution relativement forte et cohérente des différents aspects de l'agilité à la performance organisationnelle. Notre analyse met en évidence de nombreux problèmes saillants dans cette littérature en termes de contexte théorique, de conception de la recherche et de facteurs contextuels dans la recherche agilité-performance. Sur cette base, nous proposons des recommandations pertinentes pour les recherches futures afin de résoudre ces problèmes, en nous concentrant spécifiquement sur le rôle du conseil d'administration et de son leadership dans la promotion de l'agilité organisationnelle.

Resumen Este artículo revisa la literatura sobre agilidad y su relación con el desempeño organizacional utilizando una muestra de 249 estudios empíricos recientes desde 1998 hasta febrero de 2024. Encontramos apoyo para una contribución relativamente fuerte y consistente de diferentes aspectos de la agilidad al desempeño organizacional. Nuestro análisis destaca numerosos problemas destacados en esta literatura en términos de antecedentes teóricos, diseño de investigación y factores contextuales en la investigación de agilidad-rendimiento. Sobre esta base, proponemos recomendaciones relevantes para futuras investigaciones para abordar estos temas, centrándonos específicamente en el papel de la junta directiva y su liderazgo en el fomento de la agilidad organizacional.
