Influence of Business Incubators Performance on Entrepreneurial Intentions and Its Antecedents during the Pre-incubation Stage

Abstract The pre-incubation phase is critical in the forming of entrepreneur's intention and however it is almost missing in literature. Using the entrepreneurship models based on the beliefs–attitude–intention relationship, a sample of 167 pre-incubated entrepreneurs within the well-known System of Business Incubators of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education was surveyed and its statistical analysis developed with Structural Equation Modelling methodology. Our findings confirm that (1) entrepreneur's perception concerning the incubator's performance directly and positively affects the desirability, self-efficacy and the facilitating conditions, (2) the perceived desirability and feasibility in entrepreneurship, as well as the first ones, self-efficacy and facilitating conditions, positively influence the entrepreneurial intentions. Furthermore, contrary to the traditional mind-set that supports risk is a barrier, results suggest that (3) the risk perceived by pre-incubated entrepreneurs positively influences entrepreneurial intentions and the desirability that is attributed to that behaviour. Finally, these results also provide insights for organizational leaders and policymakers into managing business incubators and organising their formative programs. The effectiveness of incubators is clear but it is also important to communicate it properly so that incubated individuals can perceive it.

Résumé La phase de pré-incubation est essentielle dans la formation de l'intention de l'entrepreneur, mais elle est presque absente dans la littérature. À l'aide des modèles d'entrepreneuriat basés sur la relation croyances-attitude-intention, un échantillon de 167 entrepreneurs pré-incubés au sein du célèbre système d'incubateurs d'entreprises de l'Institut de technologie et d'enseignement supérieur de Monterrey a été étudié et son analyse statistique développée avec la méthodologie de modélisation des équations structurelles. Nos résultats confirment que (1) la perception de l'entrepreneur concernant la performance de l'incubateur affecte directement et positivement la désirabilité, l'auto-efficacité et les conditions de facilitation, (2) la désirabilité et la faisabilité perçues dans l'entrepreneuriat, ainsi que les premières, l'auto-efficacité et les conditions de facilitation, influencent positivement les intentions entrepreneuriales. Utilizando los modelos de emprendimiento basados en la relación creencias-actitud-intención, se encuestó a una muestra de 167 emprendedores preincubados dentro del conocido Sistema de Incubadoras de Empresas del Instituto Tecnológico y de Educación Superior de Monterrey y se desarrolló su análisis estadístico con metodología de Modelización de Ecuaciones Estructurales. Nuestros hallazgos confirman que (1) la percepción del emprendedor sobre el desempeño de la incubadora afecta directa y positivamente la deseabilidad, la autoeficacia y las condiciones facilitadoras, (2) la deseabilidad y viabilidad percibidas en el emprendimiento, así como las primeras, la autoeficacia y las condiciones facilitadoras, influyen positivamente en las intenciones emprendedoras. Además, contrariamente a la mentalidad tradicional que apoya el riesgo como una barrera, los resultados sugieren que (3) el riesgo percibido por los empresarios preincubados influye positivamente en las intenciones empresariales y la conveniencia que se atribuye a ese comportamiento.
