Metabolic disorders, especially diabetes mellitus and obesity have become major prevailing global public health and the treatment of these disorders has been a challenge due to the multifaceted pathophysiology of the disease as well as side effects associated with the current therapeutics. In recent years, bioactive peptides have been in the limelight due to their roles in preventing and managing chronic disorders. Several peptides have been reported as antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and antihypertensive agents, with demonstrated beneficial effects in the treatment of metabolic disorders, especially their roles in insulin resistance and glucose homeostasis through multiple pathways. This review focuses on the current findings reporting the effects of bioactive peptides in the management of metabolic disorders and their molecular pathways involved in the alleviation of the disease. In addition, the possible research gaps associated with the effect of bioactive peptides in metabolic disorders were identified to stimulate the curiosity of researchers for possible exploration.
